Next Generation Embryology
The Next Generation Embryology project, jointly run by the National eScience Centre (NeSC) at Edinburgh University, the Institute of Human Genetics at Newcastle University, and the MRC Human Genetics Unit, is funded by JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) and runs from 1st April 2009 to 30th September 2010.
The goal of the Next Generation Embryology (NG Embryo) project is to create a prototype resource that will use the 3D spatio-temporal frameworks of the HUDSEN and EMAP digital atlases in conjunction with a repository to deliver research and education material on the developing embryo. The NG Embryo repository will be populated by contributions from lecturers, researchers, and students in addition to the resources from the two atlases.
Through the online resource, we would like to provide a suite of learning and teaching materials to aid students and researchers in their study of human developmental anatomy. The repository promotes a more active way of learning than that offered by traditional anatomy textbooks, although it is not meant to be a substitution for classroom learning but a complement to it. The advantage of having an online resource is that we can create 3D anatomical models that are viewable in different planes and are interactive; something that cannot be achieved with a text book. As the repository will be open for lecturers and researchers to contribute to, the possibilities for what will be contained within it are endless.
The repository will likely adhere to the Creative Commons license "attribution, non-commercial, share alike" which allows others to download, modify and share your work providing they acknowlege you, provide the adapted material for use and don't use the content commercially. If you have any comments regarding this, or would like to contribute to the repository, please contact us.
